As an AUv3

Use RasterFX as an effect inside AUM, GarageBand, Logic for iPad and other hosts.

RasterFX is also an Audio Unit (AUv3) effect. The plug-in is the same RasterFX: the same plates, colour bar, XY pad, macros, throws and dice. It has no tour of its own, so this page is its guide.

Open the app once first

Open the RasterFX app once, all the way to the main screen. iOS only registers an Audio Unit after its container app has been launched, so a fresh install is invisible to AUM, GarageBand, Logic and everything else until you do. This is the cause almost every time.

Load it in your host

Look under effects, not instruments. RasterFX is an audio effect that also accepts MIDI, so some hosts list it in a submenu.

It works in any Audio Unit v3 (AUv3) host — AUM, GarageBand, Logic for iPad, Loopy Pro, Drambo, Cubasis and others. If it doesn't show up, see Troubleshooting.

Pro in the plug-in

Buy or restore Pro in the RasterFX app. The plug-in can't do either; its Settings say so.

The plug-in cannot talk to the App Store itself — when your host loads it, it is not running as the app — so it reads your unlock from a file the app writes. Opening the app once writes it. Then close the plug-in's window in your host and open it again; it re-reads your licence every time the window appears, so you do not need to reload the session.

What your host keeps

Your host saves RasterFX's full state with the session, XY corners included. Presets you save inside the plug-in (saving is part of Pro) are stored as the host's user presets, so they also show up in your host's own preset menu. Every factory preset is there too.

Every parameter can be automated, and a drag on the XY pad records as automation just like a knob. While your host is recording, EVOLVE holds still, so its drift doesn't get written into your automation.

MIDI

In a host you can send MIDI to RasterFX and use it as modulation. It shows up as inks in the colour bar: four CC sources (set to CC 1, 11, 74 and 71 by default), Note, Velocity and Gate. Wire them like any other ink, as described in Quick start.

What stays in the app

  • The input sources and the PLAY button. As a plug-in, RasterFX processes whatever the host sends it.
  • Recording. Record with your host instead.
  • The tour, buying and restoring Pro, and the Plug-in check in Settings › About.

Requirements

  • iOS 17 or later, iPhone and iPad
  • As a plug-in: any Audio Unit v3 (AUv3) host — AUM, GarageBand, Logic for iPad, Loopy Pro, Drambo, Cubasis and others
  • No account and no internet connection needed to use it
